World’s best wines

Once upon a time the wine expert Oz Clarke has been asked what wine he considers the best in the world. “The wine that gives you the most pleasure,” the master has replied. This aphoristic answer deserves to be an epigraph for the numerous tasting competitions on our planet. Despite the fact that it is impossible to determine the world’s best wine, the experts, the magazines, the exhibition and auction companies annually publish a list of “the best ones” in their opinion. The most authoritative are the judgments of Wine Spectator magazine, the sale of collection wines at Sotheby’s auctions. Each winemaking country has its own ranking table: in Bordeaux, California, Milan, Castilla-La Mancha etc. the achievements of world winemaking are always viewed through the prism of their own tastes and traditions. Annually, around 100,000 wine samples are evaluated at exhibitions and tasting competitions in the world, and more than 40 billion bottles are produced. So, the completeness and objectivity of the judgment about wines belongs to those who drink them.
